Pleasing the Almighty God

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will recieve the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)

This verse just keeps me going through the day. I reassess myself everyday by questioning my actions. Am I being productive? Am I using the opportunity that God gave me to the fullest? Am I working to please men or am I working to please the almighty God? As a student, I’m starting to crave to learn and grow. My lackadasical mindset needs to be diminished. I will always be learning and I will always keep the almighty God in mind. My goal is to please Him and find favor in Him, not to find approval from men. God blessed me with this opportunity, now it’s time to use the opportunity to the fullest. Thank you Lord! You are good!

Earn this

Q: “Why should we be good? Why bother with all the commands in the New Testament?”

-Philip Yancey

A: “The second illustration comes from a movie, Saving Private Ryan. A squad of GIs, led by actor Tom Hanks, undertakes a daring mission to find Private Ryan, whose three brothers have already been killed in World War II. The rescuers gripe about their assignment, insult the general who ordered it, and fight skirmishes with the Nazis behind enemy lines. Several of them die on the quixotic mission. At the very end of the movie, Private Ryan, the main object of all their exploits, comes across the captain (Tom Hanks) lying mortally wounded. Looking around him at the devastation resulting from a battle fought on Private Ryan’s behalf, the captain says these words, the final words of the film: ‘Earn this.’

Earn it. You have been graced with the courage, the sacrifice, and finally the lives of those who died so that you might live. They have nothing more to offer. But you do. You can live in a way that proves worthy of their sacrifices. Respond not out of guilt but out of gratitude, honoring what they have done.”

-Philip Yancey (pg.228)

The Saving Private Ryan reference definitely grabbed my attention. There have been people who died for the cause of the gospel. There have been countless martyrs that lived for the purpose of preserving and spreading the gospel. Ultimately, there was one man named Jesus Christ who sacrificed his life so that we may live. Therefore we as Christians must live in a way worthy of Jesus’ sacrifice. We must honor Jesus by following his commands. We must earn it.

Ashamed of the Gospel

For so many years I was ashamed by the gospel. My heart had no desire to proclaim the gospel to the world. My insecurities had more power over me and I was afraid of the ridicule and suffering. I was living a double-life that had no meaning and no genuine trust to the God above. I questioned his power and faithfulness. What has this God done in my life?! Not until I asked God through prayer to show me his magnificence and glory did I understand. A song that I hear always reminds me that I should not be ashamed of the gospel:

116 Clique-Gospel Music ft. Shai Linne

Hook:
I’m not ashamed of the gospel, y’all
It’s the power of Christ that can save us all
In the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed
And who lives by faith? The righteous will!

This world is full of sin. Even if I were to succeed in the world’s terms, I would not be satisfied. The magnitude of sin is too great to bear. Succeeding in God’s terms will bring peace to my heart. It’s time to speak the Truth!

Realization

I realized as a young Christian, I was looking for life’s truths. I was thinking there was a formula for everything and there is a truth to life. I realized there are uncertainties. Even our heroes in the Bible like Abraham and Job had extreme doubts from their toughest times. Still, they stayed faithful and pulled through those extreme circumstances. I put so much of my effort and time in looking for these truths. I thought my life would be easy peezy once I figured these things out.

What I realized is that the Christian faith is a lifelong battle. The battle between my sinful nature and the pursuit of holiness. As I continue to live and experience life, I’ll learn more and more things. I need to put my faith in this Lord that promises us true life, not the fake life that the world offers. True satisfaction…true happiness.

Avoiding Idleness

I think what keeps me off track is when I read an encouraging book or I read an encouraging article that gets me going. That’s when I stop reading and I stop searching because I think “I got it now”. I have a contentment in that certain moment and then I turn to idleness. I then turn away from God and resume my worldly desires. The funny thing is, God always brings me back anyways. I need to continue to seek which practically means reading books, reading articles, and continuing to immerse myself in the Word and searching for the Bible’s truths. I’ll never find all the answers to life’s questions but I can nurture myself and to continue to nurture my relationship with God. This helps me reassure myself that I am saved by Christ and there is hope in the future.

In Awe

The more and more I let the Holy Spirit come into my life, the more I’m inclined to yearn for Him more. It’s truly an amazing feeling. Let’s just I hope I don’t forget all of a sudden. Gotta remind myself with scripture every single day.
